Last night, Jason Lockhart broadcast SF Bulls Live from Pete's Tavern with Jamie Devane (pronounced De-Van) and Andrew Crescenzi (Cre-Shen-Zi).

















It was a great show despite a few sound problems at first. with lots of giveaways, including t-shirts, hats and tickets to the Teddy Bear Toss tonight! I hope many of you are going!

I wasn't planning on going to last night's game against the Bakersfield Condors, but I had nothing going on, so I got a cheapie ticket in the Goal end and I'm glad I did.

It was a sparse crowd on a rainy Wednesday. The Bulls don't have many weekday games, but the crowds who do show up are rowdy and enjoying themselves. If you're thinking of going to a game, you should think of going to a weekday one. I sat in Section 6 and had a great time! I even ran into a couple friends of mine who sat with me during the game. Tickets in the Goal section are only $14.50, just a couple bucks more than a movie and I'd rather go to a hockey game any day than the garbage Hollywood is making these days.

The game was great; the Bulls dominated the Condors winning 4-1 and I had a lot more fun than I would have staying at home.

Tonight is Bulls Live from Pete's Tavern in San Francisco across the street from AT&T Park. Jason Lockhart will be broadcasting live online with a player from the Bulls. There are drink and food specials, so be there! I will be.

Also, us Bulls ticket holders are still waiting to hear what's going on with the free tickets to the Bulls game at the Shark Tank. Shark ticket holders already have theirs. We're supposed to find out today, so we'll see....please take care of us, Bulls.

Will the Bulls fans get the same special treatment the Sharks fans did?

There are a couple of great games against the Colorado Eagles this weekend. Friday night is the Teddy Bear Toss. Bring a Teddy Bear and right after the first Bulls goal, toss it on the ice. All the bears will be collected and given to needy kids in the area by Seton Medical Center. Saturday night is Free Snow Globe Night. First 1,000 fans 17 years and under will get a snow globe with Rawhide in it. I want a snow globe!

BULLS DROP THREE ROAD GAMES STRAIGHT

In a disappointing road trip, the Bulls lost the three games they played on the road. Thankfully, they come home to the Barn this Wednesday for a game against the Bakersfield Condors.

Thursday, November 29^th, the Bulls lost to the Las Vegas Wranglers in overtime 6-5. This was a crazy game with plenty of chances for the team to claim victory. Penalties were the big factor.

Friday, the team traveled to Utah to play two games against the Utah Grizzlies. Saturday’s match had Taylor Nelson in front of the goal. I’m never quite as comfortable with him there as I am with Thomas Heemskerk. I just think Heemskerk is a bit better, but Nelson does need time on the ice, so Friday it was. The Bulls lost to the Grizzlies 7-4, also ending their 5-game point streak.

Then for Saturday night’s game the team was ready for a comeback, but it was not meant to be. And yet again, penalties were the culprit. Heemskerk’s goaltending was good and not the problem. Even the fights were not. Much like Friday night, there was times when the team has to fight one 5-on-3 Penalty Kills and that’s when Utah swooped in. To their credit, the Bulls were able to hold off many PKs, but how many is too many? And how much more would the score be had their not had to overcome being so shorthanded for some much of the game?

Previously, I had written that one of the keys the Bulls must overcome are penalties. Namely, they must stop committing senseless penalties. In their four-game winning streak, they had done this. The Guys had kept to smart playing, focusing on the winning line, instead of getting lost in High Stick or Delay of Game penalties (for example) that seemed to plague their more recent away games.

I’m not adverse to penalties. Everyone’s going to commit them. But, our opponents are smart and they want to win. We must want to win more and to do this, we must play smarter.

On the positive note, coming home to play will be good for the team. Go see them Wednesday night versus Bakersfield and coming up next weekend Friday and Saturday, December 7^th and 8^th they play Colorado Eagles.

If you only go to one game, go to Friday night when the Bulls host the First Annual Teddy Bear Toss! Bring a Teddy Bear to the game (no battery bears please!) and then the Bulls score their first goal, toss your bear onto the ice. All the bears will be gathered and given to kids in need. It’s a great, great event very popular in minor league hockey.

CHANGING THE COURSE OF THE TIDE or:

IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET DECENT FOOD AT THE COW PALACE?

I LOVE going to Bulls games. I anticipate the games days ahead of time, thinking about the sounds of metal skates on ice, the music, the crowds, the announcer. I love it all! Well, not all. There is one thing that could be greatly improved at the Cow Palace. And that is the food.

The Barn was built in a different era and has been home to rodeos, professional wrestling and circuses, but it hasn’t had a regular audience since it was the temporary home of the San Jose Sharks. And the food, unfortunately, hasn’t been updated or changed since I was a kid, or so it seems. And that was a long, long time ago.

The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most diverse parts of the country. We have people here from all walks of life and the San Francisco Bulls fans reflect this. Just one scan through the crowd will show that we’re not all one type of person. I think the food selection should show this even a little bit. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, the food is pretty much the standard 60s baseball fair: hotdogs, overly salty popcorn, cold French fries, pretzels, Churros, cotton candy, nachos with some weird gloopy cheese-stuff and the like. There are some meet sandwiches carved out per order in one area, but that’s about all for diversity.

I’m a vegetarian which isn’t that different for San Francisco. There are lots of us here. And a lot of people who are not vegetarian still don’t like to eat fatty, processed meat by-products. So, it would be great to be able to have a decent meal at the Barn instead of having to plan before I get there. Sometimes I’m rushing from work to a game so having to think about eating first is a hassle. No food is allowed in, or I’d bring in my own like I can at AT&T Park. But that’s not possible.

I’m not asking for the whole system to be changed, I’m a reasonable person, but couldn’t the concessioners provide fans with ONE booth where they could get maybe a salad or a veggie burger? Or how about this…why not open a Build Your Own Burrito Booth? Fans could ask for whatever they want in the burrito: chicken, beef or maybe just rice and beans. I would BET this booth would have a line all night!

Understand that the Bulls have no control of what the concessions company provides. In my effort to get to the source of how to change things, I got the name and information of the concessions company from the Bulls program. They are called Centerplate. I called their number, (which I will give shortly), and got a very nice young lady named Sophia who took my ideas and concerns and said she would pass them on.

I don’t know how much one person can do. I DO KNOW that if many of us call the number below, we can make a difference. So, if you want BETTER FOOD at the Cow Palace, if you want something not bursting with salt or sugar, if you would like to get even ONE CHOICE of something decent to eat, call them!!! You will get a Customer Service Rep. Give them your ideas, your name and phone number and if enough of us call and complain about the food, then they have to listen to us!

PLAYER REVIEW - November 25, 2012

I thought I’d make an entry every couple of months and focus on the Bulls players and my thoughts about their performance so far in the season. There’s not a bad player in the bunch, so this will be more my mental notes of their positive attributes and contributions on the ice.

PAT CURCIO – Coach

It is because of Coach Curdog, (his nickname) that we have the Bulls at all! This powerhouse of a man has more drive, more inspiration and energy than most people. He saw that San Francisco was a great sports town so he built the Bulls from the bottom floor of the Cow Palace on up. Do not underestimate his hockey knowledge nor his ability to lead this team to greatness. You owe him your respect.

#2 – MICHAEL TAM – Defense

Tam has shuffled back and forth from the Worcester Sharks. I’m sure he’d rather play in Mass, but until then, he’s doing a great job on Defense. He’s a fast, agile skater who likes to be close to the puck and in the Offense’s faces.

#6 - JOE SOVA – Defense

Sova hasn’t spent too much time on the ice, but he’s available when needed. I look forward to seeing him play more games into the season.

#9 – JORDAN MORRISON – Forward (Alternate Captain)

Morrison has 10 points so far, including an empty netter from last night. He continues to do well on the ice and hone his play sharper. I expect to see many more goals from him this season.

#11 – JAMIE DEVANE – Left Wing

Devane hasn’t had that much ice time yet. This big wing will be getting more experience and the future is wide open for him.

#17 – ROB KWIET – Defense (pronounced kwit)

Kwiet has played for a few ECHL teams before. He was last with the Stockton Thunder. Before that, he played for Greenville Road Warriors and the Reading Royals, so he knows his way around the league. He’s a good defenseman and should be able to handle our opponents well.

#18 – ALEX TUCKERMAN – Forward

Tuckerman is quite the success story. He was scratched from the beginning season’s games and only recently has been playing actively. He has 2 goals plus 1 assist so far. One of the team’s rising stars, he’ll be getting a lot more and soon.

#19 – DANILL TORASOV – Right Wing

Torasov is new to the team and has only played in a couple games. But I can tell that his speed and adeptness with the puck will help the team out a lot. If he’s on the ice, he’ll be in the thick of action, so it’s only a matter of time until his play starts burning up.

#22 – CHRIS FRANK – Defense

Frank has played 9 games with the Bulls, none recently. Give him time and a few games to get back into Defense.

#23 – ANDREW CRESCENZI – Center

Crescenzi is one of the best additions to the team this premiere season. When playing, his directness and leadership is invaluable. He has 4 points in 8 games played, including one goal, but I expect many more to come.

#24 – SCOTT LANGDON – Defense (Alternate Captain)

This is THE guy I want watching my back! Langdon has no fear protecting the net, the puck or his teammates. He’s not shy about getting a few punches in when needed either. He has 50 PIMs in 20 games, as well as 5 points: 1 goal and 4 assists.

#25 – SIMON DANIS-PEPIN - Defense

At 6’7”, DANIS-PEPIN towers over the other players. He’s played 15 games and had a bit of a slow start, but I think he is emerging as a player to watch adding 2 assist points in the last couple of games.

#27 – JESSE TODD – Forward

Todd has yet to play a game with the Bulls, so we’ll wait to see what he can do.

#29 – TAYLOR NELSON Goalie

The Bulls are Nelson’s first professional team. He does need some polishing and seasoning, but this is to be expected. I like knowing he can step up into the net if we need him.

#32 – HANS BENSON – Left Wing (Alternate Captain)

Benson only played 3 games and then was injured. Once he’s back in action, expect hard-driving action and plays from this sturdy LW.

#33 – THOMAS HEEMSKERK Goalie

I now know what the Sharks see in Heemskerk. In every game, his level of play improves. His reaction to the puck faster, his guarding instincts more precise than the game before. I am very happy with the Bulls Goaltender.

#41 – JUSTIN BOWERS – Center (Captain)

Curcio knew who the right man for team captain was when he appointed it to Bowers. He is a dynamo not just at revving up the team, but at scoring and ice action. He has 20 points and is 14^th in the ECHL for Top Scorers. Don’t expect him to stay down that low in the ECHL standings either; there will be plenty more scoring from Bowers to come!

#43 – KRIS BELAN - Left Wing (pronounced Bell-in)

Belan has 10 points with the team this season so far with 2 goals and 8 assists. He does it all, he scores, he assists and he fights. He has 63 PIMs and he usually wins those fights. Belan is a player who could go on to be a top-of-the-line player. Stay tuned.

#44 – SACHA GUIMOND - Defense

Guimond is another Defenseman who can seemingly do it all. He has 16 points with 5 goals and 11 assists. And he protects the net like a journeyman.

#45 – DEAN OUELLET – Center

As a rookie, I wouldn’t have expected Ouellet’s play to be as amazing as it is. This is his first year of professional hockey and he already has 17 points with 10 goals and 7 assists. He scored the team’s first Hat Trick in the game on November 25^th against the Stockton Thunder and I see no reason why he doesn’t continue to roll over any competition in his way.

#47 – DYLAN KING – Defense

Like a brick wall, to come across King means that you probably don’t stand much of a chance of moving the puck. In 18 games he has 4 points, 2 goals, 2 assists, and 25 PIMs. King is another Rookie who’s improving play make him one to watch.

#49 – JORDAN CLENDENNING – Center

The player with the hardest name to shout out at a game, Clendenning is not shy on the ice. Even as a rookie, he has 9 game points, 3 goals and 6 assists, as well as 41 PIMs. He’s natural reaction to get in the middle of the action will also make him a possible future captain in his career.

#55 – MAREK VIEDENSKY – Left Wing

Slovakian Viedensky has only played 6 games and he already as 9 points, split between 4 goals and 5 assists. What this means for the Bulls is look out for Vieds to be on the ECHL leader list soon. It’s going to happen.

#91 – PETER SIVAK – Right Wing

Sivak was the team’s first recruited player. And what a start to the team! He has burst into life in recent games, perhaps because of the addition of Viedensky. Sivak was born in the Czech Republic, but lived in Slovakia so it probably makes him very happy to have a fellow Eastern European player on the team with him. Sivak is as fast as the wind and as slick as fresh ice. He can weave the puck like no one else, and to see this is a beautiful thing. Sivak has spent his career up until now in Europe, it’s about time the U.S. sees how great this player is.

#92 – RYANE CLOWE – Assistant Coach

I put Clowe’s position has Assistant Coach because for now, that’s what he’s doing. Curcio, in another moment of brilliance added Clowe to the team and it’s been a huge difference. He’s helping out with Defense from what I’ve heard, but also on the Penalty Kill and Power Play. Whatever he’s doing it’s a huge thumb’s up, keep it going!!!

OK, that’s a little wrap up for now. I’ll update this in two months and see how everyone is doing.

FOUR IN A ROW

The San Francisco hockey team won their fourth straight game last night against the Stockton Thunder. Stockton fans were plenty; they pushed and shoved their way around, thinking as if they had the game in the bag even before it started. The Bulls won 6-3 and dominated most of the game. In fact, the Bulls play and coached were far superior.

The win also included the Bulls first HAT TRICK by Dean Ouellet. Other goals were scored by Peter Sivak, Andrew Crescenzi and an empty net goal by Jordan Morrison.

First, a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Ouellet for his outstanding play! And Second, to Bulls fans….when a player gets a Hat Trick you throw your cap on the ice! There’s a reason you do NOT wear your favorite cap to the game, or if you’re really smart, you take an extra cap you don’t care about with you just for such an occasion. There were very few caps on thrown, it would have been nice to see a few more. But it’s a new team and people are new to hockey traditions.

With about 2:50 left on the clock in the Third Period, Stockton took out their goalie. Why they would take him out so early is beyond me, but if I was a Thunder fan, I would have been a bit ticked off. That’s like asking for the Bulls to score some more! Which they did. After Morrison’s Empty Netter, Stockton put their goalie back in, but it was too late at that point.

I was up in the Dress Circle seats last night and somehow, there were a lot of Thunder fans. They kept shouting obscenities about the Bulls, such as “F**k you Bulls” and the like. As the Bulls kept piling on the goals, these outbursts died down and the Hometown faithful were much louder. Some Stockton fans seem to think that swaggering into the Palace and acting as if they own it means something. Well, it’s OUR HOUSE, not yours, which we proved last night.

Last night was also a Toy Drive, so there were barrels for fans to drop off toys to get a 2 for 1 coupon on Bulls tickets. It was a great way to get kids toys for Christmas they wouldn’t have without.

I got a couple more signatures for my Bulls t-shirt; last night it was Jesse Todd and Simon Danis-Pepin. I got the chance to talk to Simon for a few minutes. What a pleasure! He’s a great player and a very nice person.

Bulls are off until Thursday, November 29, when they play three out of town games starting with Las Vegas. This is the team’s first game against the Wranglers, it will be a great one to listen to at: www.knbr.com

The next home game is Wednesday, December 5^th against Bakersfield.

REMEMBER THIS NIGHT

Bulls’ promotions are great. Last night’s promotion for the game against the Ontario Reign was shopping bags with Peter Savik on the cover. Whichever of the fine people in the Bulls organization who thought up the great ideas for these promotions needs a Shout Out, because I have to say I LOVE these bags!!! I wish I could get three or four of them so I could actually USE them. The one I have is going straight into my collection. It is a thing of beauty.

Killer Bulls Shopping Bag!

It was the perfect fit for the team’s Food Drive. Let’s not forget that throughout the year many families go hungry. It’s especially true in our area where prices are so high. Sometimes a family has to choose between rent, filling up the car with gas and feeding their family. And when the thermostat drops, that need gets even more critical. The folks running the Drive had big barrels set up where fans dropped off bags of canned goods. Each donation got us a coupon for any Two-for-One ticket coupon at a future game. Excellent promotion!

And also remember that tonight is the team’s Toy Drive. The same coupon applies. Bring a toy, get a Two-for-One coupon for a future game, or use it for that night!

The promotional items are handed out by the Ice Belles. Their job is to smile, be friendly to the fans and give them whatever the promotion is for that game. Now, I can understand if the crowds are massive, the promotions didn’t show up or if the fans aren’t nice, but none of these are true, so I really can’t understand an Ice Belle being mean to a fan. I took the bag from the Belle, I said thank you, she didn’t even smile or anything, and because it was Bingo Friday, I went to take a Bingo card from a large stack. “It’s in the bag!” she shouted at me. Well, hun, I guess you could have told me when you gave me the bag, right?

If your job, other than to provide eye candy, is to be nice to the fans and help out with promotions, then you should probably do that. I have held off my opinion thus far (see an earlier blog regarding my trepidations about having them with the Bulls in the first place.) To be honest, they’re not very good at shoveling off the ice, they could take lessons from the kids who do it at The Shark Tank who rock at it! And I’m not the happiest fan about the whole ice girl thing, so, try being nicer, K?

After that whole silliness, I looked around and immediately felt at home. The Palace is my Second Home these days. I know half the vendors, ushers and fans. Sometimes I’ll go early just to walk around and say hi to everyone.

The energy last night was amazing! The crowd was superb and a great turnout as well. 4,100 came to see the Bulls, who continued their winning streak.

The game itself was exciting from start to finish. The Bulls have never beaten the Reign. In turn, Ontario has accomplished beating us in a few routs, so our win of 5 to 1 was extra sweet. Goals from the Bulls: 2 from Viedensky, 1 from Tuckerman, 1 from Sivak and 1 by Ouellet.

Most of the regulars were there. The Bull Guy in his costume was there, of course, as well as the Rowdy Crowd at the Net End of the Barn. There was also a new character last night. At first, we thought he was just some dude dancing on the Dance Cam, but he didn’t stop there. He kept dancing to the tunes the awesome game DJ pumped out and he kept peeling off Bulls t-shirts, throwing them at the crowd!

And we loved it! We cheered for him! The Dancing Man didn’t stop the whole game. Bulls crew folks kept giving him t-shirts and he ran around to every section, throwing t-shirts, getting the crowd going in cheers, dancing and really getting everyone into the extraordinary mood of the night. I did learn that the Bulls hired him to get the crowd going, which is cool, he did his job well. Bravo!

I do have a couple minor pet peeves about the in-game announcer, however. I’m not sure why it takes him so long to call out plays. Once he calls out a Bulls Power Play, for example, it’s nearly over. With penalties sometimes we never do find out what they are for. And for goodness sakes, someone teach him how to pronounce Worcester!

Speaking of the music DJ, THANK YOU!!! For keeping up the great tunes, including IRON MAIDEN!!! Dude, you rock for playing so much metal! Your friends in the headbanging community appreciate it! \m/

I have never had so much fun at a hockey game. Sure, I’ve enjoyed Sharks games, but they’re structured and rigid with none of the downhome FUN that was buzzing around the Barn last night. The only thing I can compare that too were the good times we used to have at Giants games at the Stick. Of course, when they moved to AT&T Park, along with the move, came a much higher ticker price and of course more rigidity.

If you were at the game last night, jot it down somewhere because that is one hockey game to burn in your brain and remember in Bulls history.

We’ve got another game to win tonight against the Stockton Thunder. Don’t forget to bring a toy!
